SOCAD Army Career
Degree Program - Booklet
Overview
Army Career Degrees take SOCAD to a new level of degree specificity.
They advance the SOCAD concept by more thoroughly and comprehensively
articulating degree options directly related to Soldiers military
occupational specialties. Colleges and universities offering
these degrees guarantee the award of specified credit based on
learning in military service school courses and Army workplace
experience. Army Career Degrees capitalize on distance learning
opportunities that are increasingly important in soldier development
in both military training and voluntary education.
The Army Career Degree Program translates Army training into
college credit that matches requirements in MOS-related college
degrees. They show Soldiers precise options for meeting college
requirements with Army training, in the classrooms of more than
100 SOCAD colleges, or by distance learning, testing, certification,
and licensure. Army Career Degree (ACD) plans, specialized degree
maps, currently exist for more than 80 MOSs, and new ones are
being developed - check this Web site for updates.
Electronic versions of MOS-specific ACD plans within the Army
Career Degree Program may be downloaded using the links below.
The files are in Adobe Acrobat PDF format and require Acrobat Reader 6.0 or later. You can download a free copy of Acrobat
Reader for any of several computer operating systems from the
Adobe
Acrobat Reader Web page.
Printed copies of the SOCAD Army Career Degree plans are distributed
during AIT and/or BNCOC schools of the MOSs for which they are
available. If you are unable to download a copy from this Web
site, request one from SOC (contact information is on the SOC Home Page).
The publication "SOCAD
Army Career Degree Program" (ACDP) is an information
booklet intended primarily for counselors but with sections that
also may be useful to Soldiers. Since the Army Career Degree
Program is constantly evolving, refer to this Web site for the
most current version. return to top
Selecting the Right
SOCAD Army Career Degree
There are three kinds of degree plans within the Army Career
Degree Program:
- SOCAD Army Career Degree: Typical civilian degrees
that match the specialty skills of an MOS,
- SOCAD Army Career Degree - General: Typical civilian
degrees with more general content, and
- SOCAD Army Career Degree - Specialized: Degrees especially
crafted to accommodate the uniquely military or otherwise not-easily-matched-to-civilian-courses
skills of an MOS.

The SOCAD Army Career Degree is based on college degrees
that uniquely relate to an MOS's skills and contain specific
college courses that match its competencies. (Example: A computer
studies degree in which recommended credit for military learning
is assigned to college courses typically found in a computer
studies major.)
MOS list

The SOCAD Army Career Degree - General is based on
college degrees that match the recommended credit from Army learning
experiences to their requirements in more general ways.
Military credit recommendations are assigned to one or more
general categories or to specific college courses more uniquely
related to the MOS. The degree may have a General Studies, Management,
or other broad subject area as the academic major (Example: A
computer specialist matched to a degree in Management or General
Studies rather than computer studies). return

MOS list

The SOCAD Army Career Degree - Specialized has many
of the same qualities as the General degree except its title
and major courses may be predominantly military in nature or
are otherwise different than a typical civilian course for the
same skill. The degree title and major courses would not typically
be found in civilian higher education. As with the General degree,
the Specialized plan may be useful to Soldiers, but would be
less effective in mapping MOS competencies to civilian college
courses normally associated with their specialty. (Example: A
college degree named for a military specialty and containing
courses that are unique to it.)

Will You Continue for
a Bachelor's Degree?
If So, Consider:
Some MOSs have bachelor's degree plans you can pursue directly
without an interim associate degree. The advantage: No transfer
concerns. The disadvantage: No degree if you stop short of completing
your bachelor's degree.
An associate degree's title (e.g., AA, AS, AAS, etc.) alone
will not ensure successful transfer to a bachelor's degree program - it
depends on the correct matching of the 2- and 4-year programs'
course content.
Read the Degree Objective statement on the Army Career Degree
plan carefully. If questions remain, address them to the bachelor's
degree program you plan to enter after completing the associate
degree. It is important to select the right courses based on
considerations like: Are they intended to transfer? Do they have
a place in your bachelor's degree curriculum? Must they be taken
in the upper division (junior or senior years) of a bachelor's
degree institution? return to top
How to Use the SOCAD Army
Career Degree Plan
Although the SOCAD Army Career Degree Program and degree plans
are usually introduced at AIT, BNCOC or WOBC, any soldier can
use it to plan a degree. Remember, the degree plan is for planning
purposes and a completed SOCAD Student Agreement is still needed
as a personal degree plan.
Follow these steps to determine how useful the Degree Plan
might be for you:
STEP 1. DO YOU ALREADY HAVE A DEGREE PLAN IN PROGRESS?
If so, does it lead to the degree you want? Have you already
completed the minimum academic residency required? Are you planning
to complete the degree?
STEP 2. IF YOU ANSWER "YES" TO QUESTIONS
IN STEP ONE, changes may not be necessary. When you arrive at
your next duty station, continue taking the courses needed to
complete your degree.
STEP 3. IF YOU ANSWER "NO" TO QUESTIONS IN
STEP ONE, examine the degree opportunity provided by your MOS's
SOCAD Army Career Degree plan. It is valuable because it shows
you:
- College degree programs that related to your MOS. Read SELECTING
THE RIGHT SOCAD ARMY CAREER DEGREE to help you select the right
one to meet your needs.
- Each degree requirement and any military experience that
will satisfy it. The college has evaluated your MOS and Army
training courses and determined their value in the degree.
- Specific ways including distance learning, testing, certification,
and licensing options to meet the degree's requirements.
STEP 4. Page through the SOCAD Army Career Degree plan
and estimate where you stand (i.e., How much credit do you already
have? Are the options for completing the remaining requirements
realistic possibilities for you?).
STEP 5. If you want to pursue the degree:
- Inform your next duty station's Army Education Center that
you intend to pursue the degree shown in your SOCAD Army Career
Degree plan.
- Contact the college representative listed on your SOCAD Army
Career Degree plan if there is no local representative and request
a SOCAD Student Agreement based on the degree plan.
STEP 6. If you. or anyone trying to assist you, needs
help implementing a SOCAD Army Career Degree plan contact the
SOCAD Project Director or Army Career Degree Program Manager
at 800-368-5622, SOCAD@aascu.org. return to top
